Dallas Baptist Preview

Texas A&M looks to build off a series victory over Baylor but to also put behind them the ninth inning collapse that cost the Aggies a sweep. Dallas Baptist lost eight players from last year's team and is not nearly as formidable this season. They are 1-8 against teams from the Big 12 and the Texas teams in C-USA or Mountain West. Last year they were 4-6 and split a two game set with the Aggies, winning the first game 6-1 (scoring five unearned runs) and losing 4-3 in extra innings in game 2.

The Aggies are ranked as high as #11 with an overall record of 35-11 and are 11-9 in Big 12 play. After losing to Texas Tech Tuesday night, the Patriots enter the weekend with a record of 25-20. CF Austin Krum (.354-7-40, 15-of-18 SB), LF Evan Bigley (.339-8-50), 2B Matt Tucker (.333-4-32, 13-of-18 SB), and DH Garrett Baker (.301-12-57, 18-of-18 SB) are their leaders at the plate. With Taylor starting on the mound, RHP Ryan Goins (5-2, 4.50 ERA and 1 save) is their most effective reliever.

As much as any team in the Big 12, the Baylor Bears have ripped the heart of the Texas A&M baseball team the past two seasons with late comebacks to cost A&M the series.  Baylor swept A&M on their way to the College World Series in 2005 with a three run bottom of the ninth to earn a 10-9 victory in Waco.  That momentum carried Baylor to 3-1 and 6-4 victories but in both games the Aggies had the tying run at the plate in the ninth inning.  Last year, Texas A&M gave up a game 1 lead in the top of the eighth inning before scoring two in the bottom half of the frame for a 4-2 victory.  Baylor won game two 4-1, scoring three runs in the first inning off Austin Creps before he was lost to the season with a knee injury trying to field a ground ball.  The rubber match went the Bears way with a four run rally in the bottom of the ninth, four straight one-out hits and a sacrifice fly gave Baylor a 10-9 victory.  The returning Aggie players have been waiting a year to have a rematch in the "Battle of the Brazos" and it starts Friday night in Waco.

Texas A&M has only played Texas more times than Baylor on the baseball diamond. The Aggies and Bears have squared off 293 times, while A&M has played the Longhorns 339 times. The next closest team is Rice with 259 games against the Aggies. Since the start of the split-series format in 1997, the Aggies are 7-8 against Baylor at Olsen Field and 4-11 in Waco. Since 1997, the team that has won the opening game, has won eight of 10 series.

Baylor starts as many as five true freshmen in a the lineup, those freshmen are from the #1 recruiting class in the country according to Baseball America.  They have not hit the ball or pitched as well in conference as they do in the regular season, .274-14-92 and on the mound they have a 5.99 ERA with a .314 batting average against them.  Beamer Weems is their leading hitter in conference play at .367-3-14 and that is fifth in the league.  Cassavechia is third in pitching, going 1-1 with a 1.86 ERA and has three saves.  Jeff Mandel is 3-3 with a 4.89 ERA, ranking sixteenth in conference play, and Kendal Volz is 3-1 with a 5.13 ERA and that ranks twentieth in the league.

Kyle Nicholson has been lights out in Big 12 play and is the #2 rated pitcher with a 5-0 record, 1.42 ERA and two saves.  David Newmann's short stint last week dropped him to #18 with a 3-1 record and 5.02 ERA.  He must bounce back this week and give the Aggies a quality game two start.  Texas A&M is 1-5 in the second game of their Big 12 series this year, only defeating Nebraska 8-5.  Clayton Ehlert's outstanding work on the mound should earn him more pitching time in this series, either as a reliever on possibly even starting on Sunday.

The Aggies are hitting .322, averaging 7.28 runs per game and 11.00 hits per game (last year the Ags hit .252, scored 4.4 runs and had 8.3 hits per game). A&M has at least 10 hits in 20 of the last 23 games and have scored seven or more runs in 16 of those games.  In the first 22 games the year, the Aggies hit 11 home runs, but have hit 25 long balls in the last 21 games.  Five of the eight A&M hitters with at least 2.5 at bats per team game have an average over .336 (Campbell's leading average on Baylor): Parker Dalton (.386), Luke Anders (.383) Blake Stouffer (.382), Brandon Hicks (.358), and Ben Feltner (.343). The Aggies lead the Big 12 with 107 stolen bases (2.49 per game) and have been caught just 24 times (82%). Last season, A&M led the Big 12 in stolen bases per game by stealing 88 bases on the year.  The school record for stolen bases is 133 in 1989 followed by 122 in 1996 and 119 in 1993.

After winning its first Big 12 road series since 2004 last weekend at Missouri and defeating Houston, 8-3, Tuesday night, A&M is 31-8 overall and 8-6 in Big 12 Conference play.  Oklahoma State enters the weekend with an overall record of 29-9 and is 8-4 in the league.  The Cowboys hold the all-time advantage over A&M, 29-20. Last year Oklahoma State swept A&M in Stillwater, and used ninth inning rallies to win all three games.  This series will be decided by what Texas A&M does against the OSU pitching staff.  In league play the Cowboys have a 5.07 ERA and a .311 batting average against them, while playing teams currently fifth or lower in the conference standings.  Texas A&M lost three games in the bottom of the ninth inning last year in Stillwater and the players that returned from last season have had this series circled for the past year.

Oklahoma State leads the conference in team batting average (.346), runs scored (344), hits (475) and home runs (58). The Cowboys also have the league’s top two individual hitters — senior Tyler Mach (.442) and senior Ty Wright (.436).  Mach, the Co-Big 12 Player of the Year in ‘06, is also the Big 12 leader in hits (72) and doubles (19). Junior Corey Brown, expected to be one of the league’s top prospects in the Major League draft this summer, leads the Big 12 with 59 runs scored and 53 RBIs. In addition, the Cowboys have a .976 fielding percentage — which ranks second in the league — and have a fourth-best team ERA of 3.65.

Junior Justin Friend has established himself as the Cowboys’ top reliever. He is 4-2 on the hill with a 2.66 ERA and also leads the club in appearances (13), strikeouts (50) and saves (five).  OSU uses him in the same fasion that Texas A&M has used Kyle Nicholson, he is a starter on weekends when he hasn't been used in relief.  He is the only pitcher in the Big 12, besides Nicholson, that has at least four wins and four saves.

The Aggie pitching staff is going to see a new weekend rotation.   Kyle Nicholson and David Newmann will start the first two games of the series and I expect either Scott Migl or Jason Meyer to start game three based on how the coaches evaluate the lefty-righty match-ups during the first two games of the weekend. For Texas A&M to win this series they must not allow the free base runners (walks, errors, and hits batsmen), OSU is going to get their hits and if their are no runners on base, the damage would be minimal.

Texas A&M baseball travels to Lubbock this weekend for a rivalry series against Texas Tech.   Texas Tech normally features one of the top offenses in the Big 12 but they have not been quite as potent this season. This will be the first time since 1999 that Texas A&M will enter the series with a higher batting average and more steals than the Red Raiders.  Check out the blog further down the page to see where A&M has improved since last year in average, they have improved the average with RISP and they have improved their base running percentage.  Stouffer, Hicks and Dalton all have hit over .400 since the coaches rearranged the lineup with Hicks moving to the leadoff role and the rest of the order moving down one spot.  Five players scored more than 20 runs in 56 games last year and this year six players have already scored at least 20 runs..

Thursday night's game featuring Texas Tech and Texas A&M will mark the 135th all-time meeting between the two rivals. The Texas A&M series is the most played in Texas Tech school history with the first meeting dating back to 1929. The Aggies own the all-time series 84-50 but the Red Raiders have the advantage in Lubbock as Tech leads 33-30. The Red Raiders have won the last four series in Lubbock dating back to the 1999 season. Since the turn of the 21st century, the two teams have battled to an 11-11 tie over 22 meetings.  Texas A&M's 2-1 series victory over #4 Texas Tech were by scores of 9-12, 5-3 and 13-11.  The forecast for Lubbock gets worse as the weekend approaches and it might snow on Saturday.  The third game of the 1999 series was lost to weather after Texas Tech beat Casey Fossum and Chance Caple 5-4 and 9-1.

The Red Raiders (20-12; 4-5) have to get over a disappointing series loss at Kansas State.  After getting three solid starts from its starting pitchers over the weekend, the Red Raiders will be looking for some help from its bullpen to help take a series from the Aggies. In the two games that Tech lost at Kansas State, the Red Raiders had leads in the eighth inning in both games only to watch those leads disappear when the game was turned over to the bullpen, Texas Tech allowed eight runs in the eighth inning of those two loses. The Tech bullpen was 9-2 heading into Kansas State series but has since fallen to 9-4 with a 5.83 ERA.  They gave u

The Aggie pitching staff is going to see a new weekend rotation.   David Newmann will continue to start game one but Matt Ueckert and Scott Migl are now scheduled to pitch this weekend.  Tuesday night was big night for Jason Meyer and Kyle Thebeau, both pitcher were dominate in the Aggies 9-4 victory over Texas State at hitter friendly Dell Diamond.  Coach Childress has hinted at Thebeau staying in the bullpen for the foreseeable future and teaming with All-American candidate Kyle Nicholson to give A&M two hard throwing right handers at the end of the game.   With UTSA and Houston  on tap the next two Tuesday, having Meyer return to form couldn't come at better time.

Texas A&M baseball ends a 19 game home stand with this weekend series against Kansas.   The Aggie offense has answered every question posed after last season.  They have improved their average, they have improved the average with RISP and they have improved their base running percentage.  Stouffer, Feltner, Hicks and Dalton all have scored more than 16 runs this season. Stouffer has hit over .500 and the team is hitting over .350 since the coaches rearranged the lineup with Hicks moving to the leadoff role and the rest of the order moving down one spot.  The coaches left several of the left handed hitters in last week against Florida's LHPs and that might continue this week when Kansas starts three lefties.

Kansas has a 12-9 record but that doesn't represent the playing level of the Jayhawks.  They have been terrible against legitimate teams, going 0-8 against teams that were in NCAA tournament.  They were swept on the road by Stanford and Arkansas in games that were all close and they were blown out by Oral Roberts and Wichita State in mid-week action.  Their victories are against Hawaii-Hilo, South Dakota State, Western Illinois, Tabor College, Baker College and Penn State.  Not exactly a who's-who of college baseball.

I thought going into the season that John Allman would compete for All-Big 12 honors and he has done nothing to disappoint.  He leads the Jayhawks with a .409-0-15 average and hits in the 3-hole.  A new set of Price brothers are on the Kansas infield.  Freshman Robbie Price joins his older brother Robby Price and both have above  .280 average this season.  Another player to watch is C Buck Afenir (342-3-11), he is hitting .313 with runners on base this season and has one the catcher job from senior Dylan Parzyk

The pitching staff is really rounding into the shape with David Newmann and Kyle Nicholson pitching as well as anyone in the country.  for the Aggies is looking for Meyer to return to form this weekend and if Nicholson pitches on Friday or Saturday, Meyer will be back in the starting rotation.  Jordan Chambless is still battling injury and his return is uncertain, making it much more likely that Nicholson will be used more in relief than as a starter.  With the Rice Owls waiting for the Aggies next Tuesday, if Meyer doesn't pitch this weekend he would be in line to start in Houston.

Texas A&M baseball is off to a good start but when the offense kicks in for several key starters, this team will really start to roll.  The Aggie pitching staff has nearly been airtight, but after last year, when the team ERA ranked second in the Big 12 and 25th overall, that is not surprising.  At the plate, Brandon Hicks might not have the highest average but when you factor in the number of walks that he has drawn, the transfer leads the regulars with a .524 average.  He has six stolen bases and the only time he has been ruled out, replays showed he was safe.

Texas-Pan American carries a 4-4 record into College Station this weekend. The Broncs suffered a 19-0 loss to Texas on Tuesday and went 2-1 in the Citrus Tournament in Edinburg, Texas, last weekend.  The Aggies and Broncs have played 68 times, but have not faced each other since 2003. A&M leads the all-time series, 51-17.  During their 2-1 run at the Citrus Tournament, the Broncs had four players earn Citrus All-Tournament Team honors in senior Osiel Flores (.385 / 5 hits / 2 2B), junior Roly Gonzalez (.385 / 5 runs scored / 4 RBI), Abraham Garcia (.556 / five hits / 2 RBI) and Josh Wymer (1-0 / 0.00 ERA / 8.0 IP).  In the UTPA Baseball Classic they beat Oklahoma and Texas State and are excited about the makeup of this years team.

Josh Wymer has been the big story for UT-Pan American so far this season.  He was named the Independent Pitcher of the Week after shutting out  Illinois-Chicago on just four hits.  That followed the first start of the season when he threw eight innings against Texas State in the season opener.   He picked up the 3-1 win with eight strikeouts.  He was saddled with the loss in Austin but he pitched three innings before coming out on a pitch count.  The only three runs he allowed were batters that reached on error, three straight errors as a matter of fact.

Jason Meyer will look for his second victory of the season and he leads the veteran pitching staff.  Meyer settled down after a first inning homerun against the hard-hitting Arizona State Sun Devils and only allowed an infield hit in the three innings that followed.  Kyle Thebeau and David Newmann were nearly flawless in the last two games of the Minute Maid College Classic.  Jordan Chambless and Kyle Nicholson have been excellent out of the bullpen and this pitching staff has several weapons that have not even hit the mound yet.  A big key could be getting enough offense to give Shane Minks, Evan Gerald and Gary Campfield extended time out of the bullpen to gain game experience.

Texas A&M had a successful weekend, going 2-1 at the Minute Maid College Classic.  They beat Houston and #1 Rice but lost a close game to #12 Arizona State to open the tournament.  Texas A&M used the 3-1 week to move into the Collegiate Baseball Poll at #28.

The Cowboys enter the game with an 0-3 record after a trip to the Citrus Tournament in Edinburg, Texas. McNeese suffered losses to Cal St.-Northridge (3-4), Oklahoma State (0-7), and Texas-Pan American (7-9).  Texas A&M and McNeese State have played 26 times, with the Aggies holding the all-time advantage, 21-5. The two schools have not met since 1996.  Last year was one of the most successful in Cowboy history as they won the SLC title with a 35-20 overall record and the team tied a conference record by winning 22 league games. It also set a record by winning 12 straight games during the season.

Freshman right-hander Scott Migl will get the starting nod for the Aggies. Migl, a native of Houston and St. Thomas High School will be seeing his first collegiate action. He is a tall, hard-throwing righty and he has a four pitch arsenal that has Coach Childress excited about his future in Aggieland.  The Cowboys have yet to determine a starter.  Familiar names for the Aggies should be Joe Hulett, his younger brother is Texas A&M freshman Jeff Hulett, and David Leatherwood, a former A&M squadsman from Missouri City and Ft. Bend Elkins High.  14 players on the McNeese State roster are from Texas, including RHP Tyler Davis from A&M Consolidated

McNeese State shortstop Shon Landry was named to the all-tournament team for the recent UT Pan American baseball tournament in Edinburg, TX. Landry compiled a .308 batting average during the three games the Cowboys played. The sophomore from Orange, TX, had four hits in 13 at bats. He drove in a team high three runs in the tournament..

After the the single game against McNeese State, Texas A&M will host Texas-Pan American in a three-game set on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  Gametimes have changed since last year and all weekend home series will start at 6:30, 2:00 and 1:00.
